Scars on the scalp are usually lighter and smoother than the skin around them, so they stand out, especially with a short haircut or buzz cut. SMP places tiny, hair-like pigment impressions into and around the scar so it blends into the surrounding hair and shows far less.

We commonly treat FUT strip scars and FUE dot scars from hair transplants, scars from surgery or injuries, and scarring from other scalp procedures. Most scars need to be fully healed, usually at least 6 to 12 months old, before they're ready for SMP. We'll check yours at your consultation.

Hair transplant scars: the linear scar from an FUT strip procedure, or the tiny white dots left by FUE, are two of the most common reasons clients come to us.

Surgical and injury scars: scars from brain or neck surgery, accidents, and other injuries can often be softened so they're much less noticeable.

Scars combined with hair loss: SMP can camouflage a scar and add density to thinning areas in the same treatment plan for one seamless result.

Alopecia can cause patchy hair loss that comes and goes, or complete hair loss across the scalp. SMP gives you a consistent look no matter what your hair is doing. For patchy alopecia areata, pigment is blended into the bare spots so they match the surrounding hair. For alopecia totalis, we can create a full, natural-looking shaved head with a defined hairline.

SMP usually works best when your hair loss has been fairly stable for a while. If you're in an active flare-up, we'll talk through timing at your consultation, and we always recommend staying in touch with your dermatologist about your condition.

Custom treatment plan: every treatment includes 3 sessions plus a touch-up within the year, spaced at least 5 days apart. The included touch-up is especially helpful for scar tissue, which can absorb pigment differently than surrounding skin.

Gentle, careful technique: pigment is layered gradually so the result looks soft and natural, never harsh or obvious.
